If you’d like a relatively inexpensive gas grill which looks fashionably functional and cooks brilliantly, you can’t go wrong with the John Lewis JLH3B3 3 Burner Gas barbecue. If the Weber Summit is the Bentley of the gas barbecue world, this cheeky little John Lewis model is a kind of VW Beetle.

Despite its compact size, it sports a generous 66 x 49 cm cooking area – unless you’ve invited the street along for a garden party, this is just fine for feeding the family. The rack, frame, hood and cast iron grill are all coated with tough, gleaming porcelain, making cleaning up a walk in the park. Rather elegantly, the base strut and side rests are made from German FSC Certified oak.  It’s light and easy to manoeuvre with its two fixed and two lockable castors, and you can buy an additional rotary to go with it if you’re adventurous. For a little under $400, it’s irresistible.

Fire Mountain 6 Burner Outdoor Kitchen – the Gas Grill that Trumps the Weber Summit?

February 7, 2010 BY

Fire Mountain 6 Burner Outdoor Kitchen

With charcoal-fuelled barbecues, it’s all too easy to not just grill food, but nuke it.  Primitive heat control can even result in blackened chicken breasts which are still raw in the middle! Anyone who likes food to taste as good outdoors as it does indoors, and wants a little al fresco luxury to rustle up a slap-up meal for family and friends, will swoon over the superb Fire Mountain 6 Burner Outdoor Kitchen.

That’s effectively what this stunning piece of kit is – calling it a barbecue is like calling an Aston Martin a run-around. Manufactured in gleaming high grade stainless steel, its double-skinned hood retains barbecue heat more effectively than single skinned equivalents.

Lift it and you’ll see 6 fully adjustable 12,000 BTU burners. The burner’s fire up instantly with electric ignition, and there’s a removable rotisserie, warming rack and an additional cast iron 10,000 BTU side burner. And at $850-ish, it’s superb value for money. Bon appétit!

Weber Spirit E210

The Weber Spirit E210 may be more modest than the luxurious Weber Summit S650, but it’s also, you’ll be happy to note, considerably less expensive too, at just about $450 (compare that with the Summit’s eye-watering $2,750).

If you just want a pleasant afternoon in the sun with some simple, tasty barbecued fayre, this sturdy-but-stylish little 2-burner gas grill is for you. It sports striking black porcelain-enamelled hood and grills, which are exceptionally easy to keep clean, and the generous cooking area has a warming rack to keep those chicken breasts, kebabs and burgers piping hot.

The horizontal control panel is neatly on the right of the grill and the Crossover ignition makes firing up a breeze. Dangle your BBQ tools on the three hooks while you cook, and keep your ingredients conveniently beside you on the side table. I’ll have a Corona beer with my jerk chicken, thanks.

Well, Anthony Worrall Thomson may have made his name as a portly celebrity chef, but he also has long string of culinary merchandise to his name, not the least of which is the exceptional Signature 4 Burner Gas Barbecue.

At just $400, it’s surprisingly classy for the low-to-mid range of gas grill. Its design combines sturdiness with chic, sporting matt-black and polished stainless steel surfaces. It comes with a side burner, and the four stainless steel ring burners are independently controlled.

The integral thermometer allows you to roast as well as grill, and despite its solidly robust look, it weighs only 56kg. Be warned – it comes as a flat-pack which you’ll have to assemble in the garden, but the instructions are clear and straightforward. And it comes with a genuine, Anthony Worrall Thompson barbecue recipe booklet (and the ideas are not half bad – he’s really tested this thing.)

B&Q’s Outback Platinum 6 Burner gas barbecue may seem a little expensive at around $550, but if you enjoy outdoor eating in the summer, you won’t regret a single penny spent. B&Q has established itself as one of the most highly rated brands of gas grills in the barbecue manufacturing industry. This grill has an integral temperature gauge to ensure you char-grill rather than nuke the food, a stylish porcelain enamelled cooking grill and griddle, and a warming rack with vaporiser bar to infuse the food with authentic barbecue flavours.

And it has generous storage space with two side shelves, a broad bottom shelf and a removable side table. Just roll it out on its wheels, ignite the gas and slap the kebabs on the grill. Your guests will not be disappointed.

Featuring 4 gas burners, side tables and side burner, the Billyoh 4 Burner Elite Stainless Steel also has a hood which allows additional cooking methods such as steaming and roasting outdoors. The side burner means you can cook more food even though the hood is closed, and a galvanized steel drip tray makes cleaning up a doddle. The grill has efficient and robust stainless steel flame diffusers, ensuring an evenly distributed heat, and the propane gas regulator is included in the price. It’s not ‘bargain basement’ at $550 ish, but it most certainly is very good value for money, cooks excellently and looks classy, too.

Modest looks, maybe, but fabulous food: The Kingsford Miami Gas Barbecue Grill

December 14, 2009 BY

Kingsford Miami Gas Barbecue grill

Check Amazon for Gas Grills

There’s something manly about standing around a barbecue with the guys, char-grilling the chicken and talking about chain-saws. But anyone who’s been driven to the point of maniacal laughter by flame-retardant charcoal briquettes will long for a grill that fires up at the push of a button.

The reliable Piezo ignition of the Kingsford Miami Gas Barbecue Grill will have you flipping burgers in an instant. Aluminised steel ‘H’ burners ensure the whole cooking area gets easily controlled, even heat and the neat ‘swing away’ warming rack creates a bigger grill space when the hood is down.

Great-tasting food is guaranteed by the ‘Flamesafe’ flavour rack: juices drip from it onto the heat and get vaporised, sending fabulous BBQ flavours back into the meat (excess fat drains just away). With two FSC wood side shelves and a storage shelf underneath, this versatile little gas grill will have you waxing lyrical about chain-saws in no time – and cooking mouth-watering food.

Range Grill BBQ

If you’d like a gourmet gas grill at a take-away price, you could do little better than the Range Grill BBQ from the ‘I Want One of Those’ company. Well, OK, it’s a tad on the pricey side for a take-away ($1200), but as some of the flashier gas grills come in at well over $2500, you’ll begin to appreciate that this stylish and functional grill takes some beating.

With a cool stainless steel chassis, it’s hardly a mere barbecue – it’s bigger than most people’s cookers. The grill’s cooking area is a generous 66 x 45 cm and there are four stainless steel burners with a side burner thrown in ‘just in case’.

Not only this, but you’ll get an electric rotisserie burner and you can control your roasting temperature with a gauge on the lid. And that modish push-and-turn jet ignition system will have your guests demanding to know where you got it from!

Anyone who just wants a simple barbecue in the summer months may not be too keen on trying to get those curiously inflammable charcoal briquettes alight, or on having their food suffused with the flammable chemicals added to the ‘instant lighting’ variety.

If you just want to cook a simple al fresco meal and you’re not that interested in investing in the equivalent of an outdoor kitchen, the Broil Mate 13024 Gas Grill, manufactured by the Canadian company Onward Manufacturing, might be right up your street. It’s not particularly sophisticated, but it is undoubtedly good quality as far as discount grills go.

The stainless steel burner and heavy steel cooking grates, along with the linear flow control combine to deliver an unfussy, well-made grill that will char-grill your chicken and your lamb kebabs without nuking them or leaving them black on the outside and raw in the middle.
