Algebra books may help combat brain aging

October 19, 2009 BY

Did you always hate algebra in high school? That may be true for a lot of students, but research has shown that solving even simple math problems on a regular basis can help stave off degenerative ailments of the brain, like dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

As we grow up, we stop using many of our neurons, thus dooming those to a future of disuse. Neurons that are not used for a long time dry up and get disconnected from the rest pf the neural network. Initially, this does not seem to pose any serious problem, but the shutting down of a lot of neurons is the sure shot way of inviting a host of problems, including memory loss (of both short term and long term memory), lack of concentration and loss of learning ability.

However, the situation can be prevented by simply keeping the brain busy for a little time each day, practicing math puzzles or even high school math problems. With prolonged usage, this type of usage helps rewire a number of neurons that have dried up, thus making the neural network stronger again.

So, next time you feel like exercising your brain and prevent age related ailments of the brain, reach for your high school algebra books. Those might prove to be a lot of help.
