It might as well be admitted: there are quite a few contraptions out there posing as air conditioners with very dubious claims to the title. Some simply pump out a feeble breeze of slightly less warm air.

But if you want to transform a room from a sweltering sauna into a deliciously cool haven of thermal bliss fast during those impossible summer temperatures, you’ll find it hard to beat the excellent window-mounted mounted Frigidaire FAX052P7. Regularly scoring 9/10 to 10/10 on several customer review sites, this slim but brawny little beauty really does the business, delivering a thumping 5,000 BTUs of cooling power.

It’ll rapidly cool up to 150 square feet without so much as raising an eyebrow (well, if it had eyebrows, they wouldn’t be raised). It’s also a dehumidifier and it comes with an antibacterial filter which keeps unpleasant room odours at bay and it’s amazingly inexpensive at around $150 or less. Seriously cool.

Air conditioners have a really hard time when it comes to looking cool as well generating cool. They tend to be squat, square, slightly brutish, and rather charmless in appearance, a bit like a fusion between Susan Boyle and Michael Moore.

But the Soleus PH4-12R-01 Portable Air Conditioner is different. It’s handsome; not Brad Pitt, perhaps, but definitely Daniel Craig. And it has year-round features. It’s a heater and dehumidifier as well as a cooler, packing a hefty 12,000 BTUs of heating or cooling capacity and a gutsy 1350 watts of cooling power, all for a competitive $700.

It cheerfully blasts 225 cubic feet per minute of either chilled or warmed air and has three cooling fan speeds. The ‘nouvelle evaporative technology’ means you’ll never have to empty a receptacle overflowing with dehumidified water again, and it’s soothingly, delightfully quiet. And to match its sartorial elegance, you’ll also get a smart, funky remote control, too.

Is the Clarke CA9000 3-in-1 Air Conditioner Better Value than the Amcor 1000?

February 2, 2010 BY

Clarke CA9000 3-in-1 Air Conditioner

It probably wouldn’t win first prize in an air conditioner beauty contest, but the Clarke CA9000 3-in1 Mobile Air Conditioner is a stunner when it comes to value for money. Retailing at around $400, it’s a dehumidifier, too, removing 2 – 10 litres of moisture from the air per hour, and it comes with an electronic remote control, so you can programme it without getting up off the sofa or slipping out of bed.

For an average sized room, it’s ideal, cooling at a rate of 9000 Btu’s per hour and sporting a temperature range of between 16˚C and 30˚C – just chose the level you’re most comfortable with and Clarke will do the rest. It has a wall or window adaptor and a 1.75 meter exhaust hose, and you’ll have a choice of three speeds for the fan. It’s not so much pretty as oddly handsome; more Christopher Ecclestone than George Clooney. But it’s a darned good buy.

One of the drawbacks of an over-used portable air conditioner is that it can start to stink after a while. The filters get clogged up, trapping pungent particles and allowing nasty little bugs to belch their smelly excretions into the atmosphere.

The smart Amcor 10000 Btu per Hour Portable Air Conditioner dispenses with this problem by coming equipped with washable, odour-eating carbon filters. Supplied with a window venting kit, the unit has a hot air exhaust hose extending from 0.5 to 1.5 metres and it’ll cheerfully cool rooms up to 35 square metres in size.

It has a full feature remote control, electronic touch controls and 24 hour on/off repeat timer, so you can just leave it to run itself, effectively. Thermostatically controlled, the unit has a three speed fan including turbo boost and has directional discharge louvers neatly perched at the top. It’s a little pricey at around $800, but its stylish silver casing makes it look as cool as the temperature it delivers.

Samsung Air Conditioners with Biosleep

Many of us have invested in household air conditioners to spare ourselves from those humidly sleepless nights in the midst of summer (you know, the ones that make you want to lie naked on the lawn).

But in doing so, we may have unwittingly swapped one form of insomnia for another – being too cold to sleep instead of too hot! But with Samsung’s new ‘Biosleep’ feature, you’ll have a comfortable night’s sleep guaranteed. Biosleep emerged after careful research into human sleep physiology; it adjusts the room temperature to fit with your body’s sleep cycle, not to hit a pre-fixed centigrade point.

You won’t have to keep switching the machine on and off and even though it’s working all night, the ‘Smart Saver’ technology actually saves energy (up to 31% per cent, to be precise). Put one on a wall or a window before the summer heat reduces you to a puddle of sleepless stress.

The Danby DPAC 120068 Portable Air Conditioner – it ain’t pretty, but it’s good

Danby DPAC 120068

It’s billed as stylish and elegant, but I find a rather ugly little spud, although charming at the same time. What the Danby DPAC 120068 Portable Air Conditioner lacks in glamour, however, it more than makes up for in performance.

Weighing 278 pounds, this little brute has a cooling capacity of 12000 BTU per hour and an air flow of 2.92 pt/hr. Its four louvers swing to the left, the right , or up and down, depending on where you want to concentrate the coolness. It also has a remote control, so you can operate from wherever you happen to be in the room (convenient when you’re in bed and you decide you’d like to turn it down or off in the middle of the night).

It comes with twin outlet hoses, a handy 70 pint dehumidifier and has three air speeds. Its moulded handles and four casters make it very manoeuvrable and it’s blissfully quiet, too. A swan in ugly duckling’s clothing.
